Important Announcements!

A message from Lynnette Shaw and Marin Alliance:

We are very sorry to announce that we have shut our doors until we can resolve certain legal issues. The battle is not over, but we must await further court action that will allow us to reopen, hopefully within a month or two. Unfortunately, our owner and director, Lynnette Shaw, finds it best to sever her relationship with Marin Alliance. It goes without saying that Lynnette has been a major force in shaping California policy regarding medical marijuana. We owe her much gratitude not only for the huge contribution she has made to the cause, but also for the tireless love and support she has provided to all our members over these long years. The issue of medicinal marijuana will remain one of her top priorities and you can expect that she will continue to be a guiding light in the fight for patients' legal access to medications of proven benefit. In the meantime, despite our setback, the spirit remains strong and Marin Alliance will continue to explore ways to provide services under new directorship.

It's our intention to stay in touch with our member community and keep everyone abreast of the latest developments. Our phone number will remain in operation with message updates and this web site will continue to inform on a regular basis.

As they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Though we all have experienced a temporary roadblock here in California, the collective resolve of all those who have been touched by this issue will only continue to gain strength until the day comes when sense and sanity finally prevail.

Fairfax passes Resolution

The Town of Fairfax recently passed a Resolution supporting the Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana:

RESOLUTION NO. 11 - 58

A RESOLUTION OF THE FAIRFAX TOWN COUNCIL OPPOSING THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE CRACKDOWN ON PUBLICLY LICENSED CALIFORNIA MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARIES

WHEREAS, in 1996, Californians voted overwhelmingly to approve the Compassionate Use Act, which permits the use and possession of cannabis by patients with a licensed physician's recommendation: and,

WHEREAS, medical cannabis has been shown to be safe and effective in the treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions and is routinely recommended by physicians to their patients suffering from HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, chronic pain, glaucoma, movement disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, the side effects of cancer treatment, and other serious illness and injuries; and,

WHEREAS, it is estimated that there are over 200,000 Californians who have received physician recommendations for medical marijuana; and,

WHEREAS, in 1997, the Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana was granted a conditional use permit to operate at its current location at 6 School St., Plaza, Suite 215 in Fairfax; and,

WHEREAS, the Conditional Use Permit imposes over 60 conditions on the Marin Alliance, which include inspection of medical records, inventory of medical cannabis, regulation of hours and financial audit of its sales; and,

WHEREAS over the years, the Marin Alliance has provided assistance to thousands of patients from Marin County who suffer from serious medical conditions; and,

WHEREAS, the Marin Alliance has been flexible and responsive in the management of its business and has improved its operations in response to input from Town Staff and the community; and,

WHEREAS, the Marin Alliance has developed into a welcome addition to the Fairfax business community and contributes significant sales tax to the Town budget; and,

WHEREAS, the location of the Marin Alliance falls under the explicit exemptions of California Health and Safety Code section 11352.768 (g); and,

WHEREAS, the current efforts of the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Department of Justice to close the Marin Alliance and other licensed medical marijuana dispensaries will cause a loss of dignity and liberty for patients: and,

WHEREAS, closure of the Marin Alliance will force patients to seek purchase of cannabis on the black market or to simply endure discomfort and pain; and,

WHEREAS, such consequences are counterproductive to the health of Marin residents and will increase public safety concerns associated with illicit street sales and organize trafficking of marijuana;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ORDERED that the Fairfax Town Council:

1) Opposes the current efforts by the Obama administration's Drug Enforcement Agency and Department of Justice to close publicly licensed medical marijuana dispensaries in California; and

2) Requests The United States Attorneys In All Districts Of California To Reconsider Their Decision To Use Scarce Resources To Pursue Closure Of Licensed Medical Marijuana Dispensaries In California; And

3) Supports the continuing operation of the Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana and all legal, medical dispensaries because of the humane services they provide to communities and their financial contributions to local government.

The foregoing resolution was adopted at an adjourned meeting of the town Council of the town. The Fairfax, County of Marin, state of California, held on the fourth day of November, by the following vote:

AYES: Bragman, Hartwell - Herrero, Reed, Tremaine, Weinsoff

NOES: None

ABSENT: None

Larry Bragman, Mayor
